Phillipes brasserie

It's one thing to really enjoy something, someone, someplace it's another to be able to put that enjoyment into words and tell everyone whats so good about it. When you love something i guess your mind finds no real reason to justify it, it just is, it's great, it's exactly the way you want it to be, a bit like that girl/guy you saw the other day, you couldn't really put it down to one thing, it was everything about them and when your friends ask why were they so hot, you just go 'well they just were, you should of seen them!!!' Thats right, you couldn't explain it and had they of just been there you know they would of shared your enthusiasim . Eating at a great restaurant i can't help but feel the same way...you just want people to experience it, it's as if you almost don't want to write anything about it for fear of ruining the surprise, the allure...there's not many places that hold that allure anymore around melbourne, the restaurants of the year and chefs of the decade are shoved so far down your throat that before you even get the chance to pick up the phone to make a reservation you already feel like you've eaten a 8 course degustation.

The brasserie by Phillipe Mouchel sits on the riverside of Melbournes Crown Casino complex, it nestles between what was Crowns pet restaurant up until a couple of years ago Number 8 and the soon to be opened nobu...those that scoff at the brasserie title may well be eating their words right now, a lighter more relaxed style of eating seems to have taken good favour in melbourne and for those of you that don't know Mouchel does it best. Forget the casino environment , step foot inside the Brasserie and the high ceilings and a wide open restaurant take you to another place, far away from the bright lights and button pushers that lurk inside. Sit outside on a sunny day, relax, take your time with the menu and enjoy the parade that trundles past you, from rollerbladers to the bussinemen taking thier precious hour, the scene sets itself for a perfect lunch. I say lunch because despite the disdain of Crown they have given Mouchel the ability to offer some pretty 'easy on the pocket' dining whilst still serving up consistently great food. The brasserie offers a 3 course lunch for around $40 per head or a 2 course for about $30. To start the duck charcuterie is a definate winner, the charcuterie-that which offers a selection of different types of meats dished up in different manners, is the perfect start with bites of duck ravioli, duck tartare and more but for those a little more daring the carpaccio of cured wagyu ox tongue is a delight, finely sliced pieces of tongue served with a gribiche sauce (hard boiled eggs crushed, capers, mustard, gherkins...) and beetroot salad to pick it up. To follow it's tough to go past the medley of lamb loin and rack with a eggplant moussaka...the lamb practically melts in your mouth, while the sweetbread brochette served fried and skewered with a toothpick has your stomach grumbling for more...finish off with some light sorbet as no doubt your stomach will be feeling the squeeze by now..., top that off with a nice selection of wines and some attentive yet relaxed service and the brasserie may very well become your favourite place to eat. Words arn't enought for this place, it just needs to be experienced first hand!
